Wednesday Night Trap League 2026
The Izaak Walton Club Wednesday Night Trap League is approaching quickly. Plans have been discussed and decided for the upcoming season. A trap flyer is below with dates, prices, etc. Please start planning your teams and contacting shooters for the coming year. Once you have made team plans, please let the trap manager know your plans by calling or texting to 605-359-9516 or sending an email to val.voeltz@gmail.com so we can complete our planning and scheduling shooting times.
Trap Committee Meeting
The Izaak Walton Club trap committee met to make plans for the coming year on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Our trap committee members are Troy Balk, Doug Ellis, Greg Lorenzen, Todd Nyhus, and Matt Smith. The decisions made by the committee are as follows:
Season Dates:
· Practice and sign up dates – April 15 & 22
o Time – 5:00 – 9:00
o Purpose – Sign up and payment for membership, dues and league & practice
· League – April 29 – August 26
o We have scheduled 18 weeks of league in which time your team must shoot 16 times. We hope this will help with schedule conflicts and missing teams or members.
· Fun Night – September 2
· Banquet – Banquet & Awards – September 9
· Fall League – September 16 – October 21
Shooting Costs & Prizes:
· Membership will be the same as last year
· Secretary Fees, shooting fees, team sponsor, practice, & practice cards will all stay the same as last year. See the trap flyer included in this newsletter.
· There is not a significant increase in targets, insurance, etc. so we are keeping the fees the same.
· The only significant increase is in silver coins. Unfortunately, the cost of 1 ounce silver coins will probably not fit our budget for prizes. However, a prize equal in value to last year’s silver coin price will be offered instead.
· Memberships, team sponsors, secretary fees should be paid before a team/shooter begins their first night. If these fees are not paid within the first four weeks of league, the person or team will not be able to shoot until all fees are paid.
· Weekly shooting fees can be paid for the entire year or by the week. The entire team must either pay for the entire year or by week.
· Please consider working out a way for the entire team to pay at the beginning to help simplify payment. Some ways teams have managed the entire payment at the beginning of the year:
o One person pays for entire team, and team members that shoot each week, pay that person.
o Five people pay for the entire season, and others that shoot pay the person that does not shoot.
o A schedule is determined and the team members pay according to how many times they shoot for the year.
o The total amount for shooting is divided by the number of people on the team and everyone shoots approximately the same number of times or money is passed amongst team members.
· If you want to pay by the week, some new rules apply:
o On a team, we will not allow some to pay ahead and some to pay by week. This becomes too confusing for shooting fee collection.
o The team captain or a designated person collects payment from the team members and presents the total amount to the trap manager ensuring the payment for the night is covered.
o Venmo payments will be allowed but must be pointed out to the trap manager as part of the payment.
Teams:
· Team sizes can be from 5 – 10 members. Try to have enough team members to field a team of 5 on most nights. Six to eight is the recommended size to cover each week.
· On nights you can’t field a team, consider using a sub from another team or take the dummy score of 13.
· Team members will be allowed to shoot ahead or make up as individual shooters with approval from the trap manager.
Rainouts:
· With the extension of the season to 18 weeks, most rainouts should not be a problem as they can be made up during the 2 extra weeks.
· If several rainouts occur and we fall behind, we will schedule make up days as needed.
· Make ups will also be allowed before 5:30 or after teams are done shooting for the night.
· Make ups will be allowed on the practice trap on a limited basis to keep the trap available for practices most of the evening.
Practices:
· Practice prices are $7.00 a round or $60.00 for a punch card for 10 practices.
· Practices will be held on trap one during the evening.
· To shoot a practice, you must sign up and pay or punch a practice card in the trap house building prior to shooting.
· The person that is scoring on trap one will verify shooting list & payment before starting.
Rule Reminders:
· When on firing line, keep shotgun pointed down range; always keep gun pointed in safe direction.
· Keep gun unloaded and action open when moving from station to station.
· Only one shell in the gun at a time, unless shooting doubles.
· Spectators: Please show respect for the shooters. Hold down the noise.
· Small children must be supervised and are not allowed near the runways.
· No alcohol before shooting.
League Scores:
· Reports will be posted each week in the trap house building.
· Reports will be available a day or so after on the website at this address: Sioux Falls Izaak Walton - Scores
· Reports are also available through the Team App phone app. To get access to this app, follow instructions:

New Hat Design
This new hat design is meant for better calling ability and for people who forget to take off their callers at the end of their shooting as demonstrated by Riley Zomermaand. To quote Riley, “This totally could work, I like it.” Riley agreed to test it out next spring.
Fun Night
The last Wednesday night trap league was August 20 and winners have been determined. For latest scores and standings, check out the website at Sioux Falls Izaak Walton - Scores (sfikes.org)
Fun Night was August 27. It was a fun time, with some extra attractions available including doubles and Annie Oakley with the trap kids joning in the fun. According to Harry, they shot out some old folks.
The Wednesday night trap league started on April 30. There are 24 teams and 167 shooters this year. We have 3 teams of high school or recent grads, and several other teams that have members that are high school or young adults. We also have several father/son/daughters shooting either on the same team or separate teams. It is a welcome sight to see families and their youth joining our trap shooting family. Several teams have also added new members.
